Marcel Moyse (France)

Marcel Moyse (May 17, 1889 - November 1, 1984) was a famous French flute player, for whom many pieces were written (eg. the Concerto by Jacques Ibert, 1934). He was also a gifted flute teacher, and authored many studies and exercises for flute.

Marcel Moyse was born on 17 May 1889 in St. Amour, France. He studied at the Paris Conservatory and was a student of Philippe Gaubert, Adolphe Hennebains and Paul Taffanel, all of whom were distinguished virtuosos in their time. His trademark tone was clear, flexible, and penetrating. This was the French style of flute playing that was to influence the modern standard for flutists worldwide.

Marcel Moyse was a founder of the Marlboro Music School and Festival. He was an inspiring teacher who strove to teach his students not how to play the flute but to make music. He often performed together with his son, Louis Moyse (1912-2007)[1]. Among his many students were Trevor Wye, William Bennett, Sir James Galway and Jean-Claude Gerard.

Marcel Moyse died on November 1, 1984 in Brattleboro, Vermont, United States.

Claudi Arimany was born in Granollers near Barcelona (Spain).He is considered one
of the most prestigious spanish soloists with considerable international projection .He has
performed ,always as soloist , with artists of the calibre of J.P.Rampal, M.Nordmann, F.Ayo,
N. Zabaleta, V. de los Angeles , C.Orbelian, V.Pikaisen, R.Pidoux, John Steele Ritter, J.Suk,
A.Nicolet, J.Rolla, J.J. Kantorov, etc.
and has been invited by some of the most important orchestras in the world such as the
English Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia Virtuosi of New York, Berin Philarmonic Atheneum

Catalana , Beethoven House (Bonn), Auditorio Nacional de Madrid , Rudolfinum (Prague)
,Hollywood Bowl (Los Angeles),Tchaikovsky Hall (Moscow),Gasteig(Munich), Théâtre Champs
Elysées, Salle Pleyel and Salle Gaveau (Paris) or Suntory Hall and the Bunka kay kan in
Tokio.

He is a jury member for the “J.P.Rampal International Flute Competition” held in
Paris, in adition to many other international competitions.
He has made numerous recordings for labels such as Sony Classical, Novalis, Delos
Int.,some of which have been awarded prizes.
Considered by Jean -Pierre Rampal as one of the finest flautists of his generation,
they shared platforms around the world and .he inherited a style of interpreting and
understanding the art of music.
Claudi Arimany uses for his concerts the emblematic W.S Haynes gold flute that
belonged to J.P. Rampal.

The Levin/Stern Duo

The Levin/Stern Duo was founded by Sharon Levin and Karen Stern in 1984. As the winning ensemble of the Artists International 1987 Young Artists Chamber Music Award, the Duo was presented in a New York debut recital at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 1988. Following that successful concert were appearances on WQXR's "The Listening Room" and the "McGraw Hill Young Artists Showcase," two recital tours in Europe, two recital tours in Brazil including concerto appearances of the Mozart Harp and Flute Concerto with the Brazilian Symphony and the Chamber Orchestra of Sao Pedro Theater. They also performed at Merkin Concert Hall, toured Costa Rica and performed in Ecuador as recitalists and concerto soloists with the National Symphony of Ecuador. They have also made television appearances on national TV in Brazil, Ecuador and Costa Rica. They have had numerous performances in the New York Metropolitan area.

Sharon Levin has been a featured soloist with the New Jersey Pops Orchestra, National Symphony of Ecuador, Hudson Chamber Symphony, Society of Musical Arts Orchestra, Lyra Italienne Orchestra of Paris and others, in additional to the performances of the Mozart Harp and Flute Concerto with Karen Stern. She has performed in France, Switzerland, Germany, Brazil, Ecuador, Israel, Costa Rica and throughout the New York area and was principal flutist with the New Jersey Pops Orchestra from 1988 to 2002. She has also appeared on national television and radio in Ecuador, Costa Rica and Brazil. Ms. Levin is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, the Manhattan School of Music and a recipient of the Certificate of Award in Chamber Music from the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris, France. In 1996 she performed to a sold out house at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall as a Distinguished Artist of Artists International. She since has returned to Weill Recital Hall in 2000, 2002 and 2008 performing chamber music. She conducts the Flute Choirs for the Stamford Young Artists Philharmonic Program in Stamford, CT and performs and teaches in the North East.

Karen Stern performs regularly with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and participated in the Symphony's two concert tours of Ireland. She can be heard on the Symphony's recent CD recordings of Dvorak's "Biblical Songs", Gliere's Symphony No. 2 and the Red Poppy Suite, all on the Delos label. Ms. Stern has been a soloist with the New Jersey Symphony, Plainfield Symphony, Society of Musical Arts Orchestra, and the Adelphi Chamber Orchestra. She has played with the American Symphony Orchestra, American Ballet Theater Orchestra, New York City Opera, New York City Ballet, Long Island Philharmonic, National Symphony of Costa Rica and Broadway show orchestras. She has performed on the Queen Elizabeth Two Cruise Ship and has recorded a CD with the New York Harp Ensemble and Eva Marton on the Hungariton Label. Ms. Stern is a graduate of the Boston University School for the Arts and the Manhattan School of Music. She was featured as a concerto soloist with the New Jersey Symphony of July of 1997. Ms. Stern is also an attorney, holding a Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers University School of Law.

Amanda Sparfeld (USA)

Award-winning flutist, Amanda Sparfeld (Blaikie), is being widely recognized for her musical ability. She has served as principal flutist of the Miami City Ballet, and has performed with orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Orlando Philharmonic, Boca Raton Symphonia, and the Florida Sunshine Pops. Amanda has worked with artists including Julius Baker, James Galway, Jeanne Baxtresser, Trudy Kane, Brad Garner, Leone Buyse, Jim Walker, Carol Wincenc, Michel Debost, Bonita Boyd, Amy Porter, and many others.

Premiered works include Roberto Sierra's Symphony No. 1, Christopher Rouse's Wolf Rounds, and David Maslanka's Trombone Concerto. Amanda performed for Phillip Glass with the Frost Opera Theater, and has performed alongside David Robertson, Christine Brewer, Helmut Rilling, Nicholas McGegan, David Amato, Mark Sparks, and Craig Morris.

After winning the state and regional competitions, Amanda was a National Finalist in the MTNA Young Artist Woodwind Division, and has won numerous others, including Artist Presentation Society, Southern Illinois Young Artist Competition, Sigma Alpha Iota, the Sheldon Young Artist Series, the University of Miami Concerto Competition, and the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition.

Currently, Amanda is pursuing a Professional Studies Degree in Orchestral Performance at the Manhattan School of Music where she studies with Robert Langevin. She received a M.M. in Flute Performance from the University of Miami's Frost School of Music, where she was appointed the Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Flute Studio, and holds a B.A. in Music with Highest Honors from Principia College. Principal teachers include Marie Garritson Jureit, Christine Nield-Capote, and Jenny Robinson.

Amanda Sparfeld actively teaches students of all ages and performs in venues around the country.

Andrea Oliva (Italy)

Andrea Oliva was born in Modena, Italy in 1977. He got a diploma in flute in five years with full marks at the Istituto Musicale Pareggiato “O. Vecchi” in Modena with the guidance of G. Betti and he attended the specialization courses held by M. Marasco and C. Montafia and J. Galway. He won several national and international contest both in duet with piano and as soloist, such as the International Flute Competition “A. Ponchielli” CR-2000, in 2004 the 3rd prize at the ARD competition in Munich and in 2005 the 1° price in the prestigious competition in Kobe-Japan, the first italian that won this competition.

In 1999 he became member of the »GMJO« under direction of C. Abbado and, in the festival of Tanglewood, of S. Ozawa. He collaborated with various lyrical and symphonic Orchestras such as the Teatro alla Scala in Miland, the ORT in Florence, the “Arturo Toscanini” in Parma, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra Mozart in Bologna (with C. Abbado) and the Bayerischer Rundfunk in Munich.

He continued his musical studies in the flute class of J.C. Gerard in Stuttgart before entering in 2000/2001, the Academy “H. von Karajan” of the Orchestra of the Berliner Philarmoniker (with the guidance of the flautists A. Blau and M. Hasel) At the age of 23 he plaied as first flute in the Berliner Philharmonik orchestra under the direction of C. Abbado and M. Jansons (for TDK, DVD: »Night’s Encore«).

In 2001 he became Solo flute in »Teatro dell’Opera of Rome and actually he is the First Solo-Flute at the Symphony Orchestra of Santa Cecilia in Rome (conductor A. Pappano). He is often invited in various musical exhibitions all over in the World such as »Flautissimo« in Rom, »the Falaut day« in Mailand the »Slovenian flute festival« in Lubiana and the »NFA flute festival« (this year in Pittsburgh, USA).

He is also member of the »Nuovo quintetto italiano« wind quintett doing tournee in all the World. The next July he’ll do a soloist tour throght Japan.

Antonio Di Giamberardino Nato ad Avezzano (AQ) il 29 marzo 1982 si è diplomato in flauto traverso presso il Conservatorio Santa Cecilia di Roma nel 2004 sotto la guida del M° Gianluca Petrucci e nel 2007 acquisisce il diploma/laurea di II° livello in “Discipline musicali” con il massimo dei voti e la lode. Ha partecipato in qualità di allievo effettivo alle master class del M° Antonio Amenduni e del M° Bruno Cavallo. Ha partecipato ai corsi internazionali di alta formazione orchestrale e di musica da camera organizzati dall’associazione “Amici della musica” di Lanciano. Si è esibito più volte sia in qualità di solista che di orchestrale presso la Capitale. Attualmente sta frequentando il corso di flauto con il M° Michele Marasco e il corso di ottavino con il M° Nicola Mozzanti presso L’ A.I.F. a Roma. Absolvent al Conservatorului din Bucuresti in anul 1961,flautistul
Nicolae Maxim a beneficiat de indrumarea profesorilor Petre
Giugaru,Alexandru Nicolae si Vasile Jianu..Imediat dupa incheierea
studiilor universitare a fost angajat la Filarmonica din Bucuresti, al
carei Director era Maestrul George Georgescu. Datorita calitatilor
sale de exceptie a fost promovat pe postul de sef de partida(flaut
solo).
In afara activitatii sale permanente in cadrul Orchestrei Filarmonicii
“George Enescu”, N. Maxim a sustinut numeroase recitaluri, a
facut parte, de-alungul timpului ,din diferite formatii de camera
precum: Trio Baroc, Trio Romantica, Formatia Grupetto, cvintetele
de suflatori Concordia si George Enescu, formatia de muzica
contemporana Hyperion, orchestrele de camera Bucuresti, virtuozii
din Bucuresti si, desigur cea a Filarmonicii.. A avut ocazia sa cante
la toate editiile Festvalului Enescu. In 1988 a fost invitat sa faca
parte din World Philharmonic Orchestra care a concertat la
Montreal.
Este de remarcat numarul mare de inregistrari realizate pentru
Radio Romania, dar si cele realizate alaturi de Filarmonica “George
Enescu”, avand la pupitru pe Maestrul Cristian Mandeal (integralele
Enescu si Brahms).
Actvitatea sa artistica se impleteste permanent cu cea didactica,
N. Maxim fiind din 1996 Profesor la Facultatea de Muzica a
Universitatii Transilvania din Brasov.
Preocupat permanent de a cinsti memoria inaintasilor muzicii
instrumentale romanesti, N. Maxim a initiat sub patronajul
Filarmonicii ,concerte omagiale dedicate lui Petre Elinescu, V.
Jianu. .,dar si ciclul Creatii romanesti ale muzicii pentru flaut.
Artistul este invitat adesea sa faca parte in jurii la Concursuri de
specialitate. Intreaga sa activitate artistica a fost recunoscuta si
prin acordarea Meritului Cultural cl.I. Figureaza in Who’s Who
Romania 2002.

After obtaining the First Prize of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, Brigitte Buxtorf was a flute soloist with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, for six years. She then perfected her mastership of the instrument with Jean-Pierre Rampal, and obtained the third prize in the Geneva International Contest.
She is now devoted to a brilliant career as a soloist and in chamber music, in particular with her flute and harp duo. She also teaches the professional classes at the Conservatory of Lausanne.
Brigitte Buxtorf has interpreted the majority of the works of André Jolivet, who wrote of her that she is "one of the most gifted flautists, with exceptional musical talent, and genuinely convinced of the role of music."
She has made many recordings, within a flute and a harp duo, with pianoforte and with chamber orchestras.

JANOS BALINT - (Hungary)

Amazing Hungarian musician. Critics use to call him "flute magician" whose "virtuosity reminds to great Paganini". He played hundreds of concerts in Europe, USA, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, collaborating with such a great musicians like Zoltan Kocsis, Ruggero Ricci, Gervase de Peyer, Pierre Pierlot, Ransom Wilson, Aurele Nicolet... and with some of the finest European chamber and symphonic orchestras. At the moment he is working as a flute professor at Musikhochschule Detmold in Germany, as well as at Academia Musicale of Imola in Italy and he is a solo flutist at the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Hungary. He regularly does master-classes all over the world, during the year. Janos Balint is also famous as being one of the most productive studio musicians. By now, he has published 24 CD-s with Hungaroton, Capriccio and Naxos companies. His latest CD with Zoltan Kocsis, published last year, including pieces of Dvorak, Schubert and C. Franck, has acclaimed as one the best recordings for years, in Europe. He is the Artistic Director of Auer Summer Academy and Festival of Veszprem, Hungary. His repertoire includes more than thousands pieces, practically almost whole existing flute literature.

Isabelle Chapuis Starr, flutist (France)

Born in Dijon, Isabelle Chapuis Starr studied with several of France's best-known flutists, including Jean-Pierre Rampal, Michel Debost, Gaston Crunelle, Christian Lardé, Alain Marion and Marcel Moyse.

She attended the Conservatoire national supérieure de musique in Paris, in the flute class of Jean-Pierre Rampal. In 1970, she won the Premier prix de flûte at the Conservatoire de Paris. The jury for this competition was presided by James Galway. And in 1971, she won the Conservatory's Premier prix de musique de chambre. [The Paris Conservatory's Premier Prix in Flute is an award that goes back continuously for almost two centuries to early winners such as Toulou and Demersseman. The historical list of winners includes virtually every famous French flutist.]

Katrina Walter holds degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (Master of Music) and Northwestern University (Bachelor of Music, Summa Cum Laude). In addition to her formal education, she has studied and performed at the Aspen Music Festival and School (Aspen, CO) & the Music Academy of the West (Santa Barbara, CA).

Currently a fellow with the New World Symphony in Miami, Florida, Ms. Walter's orchestral career has led her throughout the United States, Eastern Europe, and South Korea. Katrina was a winner of the 2007 New York Flute Club Young Artist Competition (2nd place), as well as the Music Academy of the West 2006 Concerto Competition. Tamara Hartman is a highly skilled flutist and teacher from South Florida. She has a Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance from the University of Miami, where she focused on contemporary music and worked with composers from across the globe. With a multifaceted background in graphic design, fashion, fine arts, electronic music, and composition, Miss Hartman has become a well established interdisciplinary performer in the South Florida area. She currently is residing in Manhattan to pursuing a Masters' degree in Music Performance at NYU with master contemporary flutist, Robert Dick. Her teaching style is interdisciplinary yet structured, geared towards obtaining maximum results in minimum time while still catering to each student's individual needs and interests.
